The Phantoms Rock Sutton
Written by Roz McCaffrey
Sunday, February 25, 2001

There are thousands of covers bands knocking around - mostly doing the same old same old. So it's great when you get to see a band doing things a little differently.....cue The Phantoms!

I went to see The Phantoms last night at Scruffy Murphys in Sutton, Surrey. I knew before hand that they were a 3 piece rock covers band so I went prepared to hear the same old standards. I wasn't expecting much - I've seen 3 piece bands before and there always seems to be something missing. These guys break that mould.

They opened with Losing My Religion by REM. OK - lots of bands cover that one. But by the first chorus they had me intrigued. They were extremely tight and the sound was full.

Iain's vocals were great - a good front man. I'd like to see them on a bigger stage coz unfortunately there wasn't room to swing a cat.

The place was packed - but the crowd weren't giving them their full attention until they ran the second number - Pumping On My Stereo - Supergrass.

Next came Foxy Lady - which had most of the crowd doing 'Garth' impressions (remember the Waynes World scene?)

The band continued to surprise with covers of Stereophonics, Semisonic, The Peppers and they did a fantastic version of Pretty in Pink - haven't heard that one for ages!

The guys kept the crowd going all night - great atmosphere - great music.

So - good things do come in small packages after all.

Check-out The Phantoms' page on Giglist.com to find out where the guys are playing next.
